Dateline March 9, 1964: Ford Motor Company rolled off production the Mustang, a new breed of "pony" sports car with a long hood and a short deck much like a pony in full stride. From its highly successful launch then, the Mustang consistently remained the stylish and dependable car throughout its several transformations.
The first-generation Mustangs were of the four-seat type that retained the components of the classic Ford Falcon and the Ford Fairlane in suspension, chassis, and drive-train. The body shell of the Mustang was totally different, though, with its wider berth, shorter wheel base, lower seating elevation, and full car height.
In 1973, the second generation Mustang came out as a larger and much different version of the original. Die-hards cried out for the retention of the original 1964 design concept, size, and features so that a downsized model had to be introduced, which model was patterned after the Ford Pinto subcompact. The larger model came to be the Mustang II.
The year 1979 saw the entry of an all new Mustang with a larger platform, restyled and roomier interiors, and a more spacious trunk and engine bay. The third generation Mustang body style came in both hatchback and coupe types. Engines come either in 88 hp 2.3 L four cylinders or the 109 hp 2.8 L Cologne V8, all descendants of the Mustang II breed.
After 15 years, the Mustang again underwent a major transformation in 1994. The new design, SN-95, was an updated, more dramatically styled version of the Fox rear-wheel drive platform. Unlike the previous Mustang models, there was no fastback (or hatchback) in the 1994 version. The engine for the base model was the 3.8 L V6, and the GT model had 302 cubic inch V8. That year, Motor Trend magazine awarded the Car of the Year award for the third time to the Mustang.
Retro-futurism is the theme for the fifth generation Mustangs as they came in the 2005 model year with a completely redesigned exterior that nonetheless was inspired by the 1967 and 1968 Mustang models. The retro-coupe design reinforced the Mustang’s muscle car reputation for style coupled with dependability and power performance. The 4.0 L SOHC Cologne V6 replaced the 3.8 V6 in the 2005 Mustang base model. The GT came with a 300 hp 4.6 L Modular V8.
The Mustang also had several special editions like the Boss 302 and the Mach 1, the Mustang SVO and the Mustang SVT Cobra. Each and every model, though, from the main line to the special edition, retained that legacy of style and dependability the nostalgic fans of the Mustang look for.
